The Run I Needed

Well, friends, I got the training run of my dreams today.  Actually in my dreams I’d run way faster but realistically this was the best run I could have asked of myself. I did the 20 miles right around marathon pace, slightly slower than I hope to run on race day, but I felt strong.

It also didn’t hurt that it was in the 60’s while I was running and an absolutely perfect morning…sunny with a light breeze.  I didn’t get anywhere near as sweaty as I normally do 😉

How gorgeous is that sky?? I set out running about 20 minutes after I took this picture but I always enjoy how peaceful the mornings are before my long runs.  This was about 6:30ish I think.

I guess I should note how I fueled up last night.  I made a big bowl of brown rice spaghetti with olive oil and sea salt and then later topped off the night with some frozen yogurt.  Vanilla froyo, hot fudge, and chip & nut mix.

This morning I had pb & honey on Udi’s gluten free bread plus one of my Perfect Fuel Chocolates for breakfast.  With black coffee, of course.  I filled my camelbak with my usual half water/half coconut water mix.  I brought two packs of Sport Beans, but only ended up eating one, around mile 13.  I didn’t even look at my watch until mile 12….I just didn’t want to think about how much I had left.  I just wanted to concentrate on the moment and to keep on goin’.  I also didn’t have to stop for water this time, likely the result of the lower temps so I wasn’t as thirsty, so I went all 20 miles without stopping.

I’m really happy with how this run went.  It was just the confidence booster I needed for my last long run of this marathon training.  I only have a 12 miler and an 8 miler left on my “long run Saturdays”, so I told myself all week I was going to make this run count, make it the best yet.  My positivity going into it really helped me I think.  I never let myself think I couldn’t do it.  I just kept telling myself I’d rock it, and to me, I think I did.  If I can keep this pace up for the marathon, I’ll finish around 4 hours, which would be amazing.  My pace hovered around 9 minute miles, sometimes faster and sometimes slower.  But I’m happy with it!

Now I’m going to get ready to watch my Wake Forest boys play Florida State on ESPN.  So glad the game is on TV.  I know FSU is great this year, but hopefully Wake will have some confidence coming off beating Carolina (woop woop!!!) and FSU always seems to struggle against the Deacs!  We’ll see!  I’m just glad I get to watch the game 🙂

Oh, and I also need some food.  My tummy is growling…


Morning 10K

I am proud of myself.  I woke up extra early and got a run in before another long day at work.  My alarm went off at 5:30 and I was out the door around 6 or so.  I did a nice little 10k (6.2 miles) and was surprised at how many people were out and about that early!! School is definitely back in session. I always really miss being at Wake Forest at the beginning of a new school year.  Fall is coming fast and I couldn’t be happier about it.

My run was okay, definitely not the fastest 6.2 miles I’ve ever done but I feel like with all the sitting I’ve been doing at my desk lately that I’m just proud of my legs for getting through it.  Now I don’t have to worry about fitting in my exercise today because I already did it.  That’s a great feeling!

I’ve been worried that my marathon training and my endurance has been suffering because of lack of time to run how I’d like to, but I will stay optimistic that each day and week will be better than the last and I won’t lose too much running shape.
